Day 66 : Mark 6:14-29

Read Mark 6:14-29

Helpful Background Information:

  • Mark 6:14-29 tells the tragic story of John the Baptist’s death at the hands of King Herod. Herod had originally imprisoned John because he condemned Herod’s illegal marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife. Though Herod feared John and recognized him as a righteous man, he ultimately gave in to the manipulative schemes of Herodias. When Herodias’ daughter danced at a banquet and “pleased” Herod, he foolishly promised to give her anything she wanted. At her mother’s urging, she asked for the head of John the Baptist. Though Herod was deeply distressed, he chose to honor his reckless oath and ordered John’s execution.

  • Herod valued his reputation and power more than doing what was right. Likewise, Herodias’ grudge against John fueled her desire for revenge, and she used her daughter as a pawn to accomplish her wicked goal. In contrast, John the Baptist stood for truth, even at great personal cost. His death foreshadows Jesus' own unjust suffering at the hands of corrupt rulers.

Reflection Questions:

  • Herod was deeply troubled by John’s words but still refused to repent. Are there any areas in your life where you feel convicted but struggle to change?

  • John the Baptist stood for truth even though it cost him his life. What does this passage teach you about the cost of standing for righteousness?

  • Herod was “exceedingly sorry” about John’s execution but still followed through with it. Have you ever done something you knew beforehand was wrong? How can you cultivate more courage to do what’s right in time where doing what is right is not easy?
