Day 29 : John 17:6-26

Read John 17:6-26

Helpful Background Information:

  • In this passage, Jesus prays for His disciples shortly before His arrest. He thanks God for giving the disciples to Him and prays for their unity, sanctification, and protection. Jesus also prays for future believers—those who will come to faith through the testimony of the disciples. He prays that all His followers would be united in love. This loving unity will reflect the unity between the Father and the Son. Jesus desires that His followers would not only know God’s love but also glorify Him through their lives, showing the world who He is through their love for each other.

Reflection Questions:

  • Why do you think Jesus emphasizes unity among His followers? How can unity within the Church show the world who Jesus is?

  • Jesus prays that His disciples would be sanctified by God’s truth. How does engaging with God’s Word help us live set-apart, holy lives?

  • In Mark 3:14, Jesus appoints the Twelve so that they might "be with Him." In John 17:6, Jesus says He has manifested God’s name (or made God’s character known) to the disciples through His time spent with them. How can you spend more time with Jesus this week to better reflect God’s character in your life?

  • In John 17:20, Jesus prays for future believers who will come to faith through the testimony of the disciples. In Mark 3, we see Jesus beginning this chain of discipleship by calling the Twelve. Who can you share your faith with, continuing the mission Jesus began?
