Day 51 : Mark 5:1-20

Read Mark 5:1-20

Helpful Background Information:

  • After calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus and His disciples arrived in the region of the Gadarenes, a Gentile territory on the eastern side of the lake. As soon as Jesus stepped out of the boat, He was confronted by a man possessed by many demons. This man lived among the tombs, isolated from society, destroying his own body, unable to be restrained even by chains. However, despite the power these demons had over him, they immediately recognized the supreme authority of Jesus and pleaded not to be sent away.

  • Jesus demonstrated His power over the forces of darkness by commanding the demons, known as "Legion," to leave the man. At their request, Jesus allowed them to enter a herd of pigs, which then rushed into the sea and drowned. The people of the region, instead of rejoicing over the man's deliverance, were fearful and asked Jesus to leave. However, the man who had been freed begged to stay with Jesus. Instead, Jesus sent him home to share his testimony, making him one of the first missionaries to the Gentiles. This story reveals Jesus’ authority over evil and His compassion for the most broken and outcast individuals, showing that no one is beyond His saving power.

Reflection Questions:

  • The demon-possessed man lived in isolation, tormented and out of control. In what ways does sin or spiritual bondage isolate people today?

  • The demons recognized Jesus as the "Son of the Most High God," and even prayed to Him in a way (verse 10) but did not surrender to Him. How is their knowledge of Jesus different from true faith?

  • Why do you think that Jesus refused to let the freed man follow Him?
