Day 2 : Malachi 2:17-3:5

Read Malachi 2:17- 3:5

Helpful Background Information:

  • Mark immediately opens up his gospel by stating “Just as it is written”; indicating a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. In Mark 1:2, the gospel writer shows John the Baptist as fulfilling the role of the Lord’s messenger from Malachi 3:1. Malachi was the last Old Testament prophet, writing around 433-424 B.C. This was a century after the Israelites returned from their exile in Babylon under the leadership of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah.

  • What should've been a joy-filled return home, however, was not what it was supposed to be. Very few Isrealites returned from exile. The temple was rebuilt, but it was nothing compared to what Solomon built centuries before. After being back in the Promised Land for only a century, the religious life of the Jews became ritualistic and hard-hearted toward God’s great love for them, leading to widespread departure from God’s word and law: both by the people and the priests. In Malachi 2:17-3:15, we read of a great promise. Even though the people have been living hard-heartedly towards God, God will send a messenger. After whom, God himself will come and refine Israel’s worship and restore the hearts of his people.

Reflection Questions:

  • How does Malachi 2:17-3:5 help us understand Mark:1:1-15?

  • What promise does God make in the passage?

  • How is God’s promise fulfilled in Mark 1:1-15?
