Day 35 : 1 Corinthians 1:10-17

Read 1 Corinthians 1:10-17

Helpful Background Information:

  • In 1 Corinthians 1:10-17, the Apostle Paul expresses an urgent request to the church in Corinthians to come together in unity. The Christians at Corinth were split into rivalries, with different groups claiming to follow Paul, Apollos, Cephas, or Jesus. The word Paul uses to describe these divisions is the Greek word schismata, from which we get the English word Schism. These rivalries were fueled by pridefulness and envy, ignoring the humility and harmony which stems from a relationship with Christ. In short, divisions were threatening to destroy the Corinthian church.

  • To cure the divisions in the Corinthian church, Paul lovingly commands the Corinthians to have the same understanding and conviction. Their unity was not based upon the teachings of one leader or another, but rather on their individual relationship with Christ. As each Corinthian realizes they have been saved by the same Lord and enjoy the same Holy Spirit, they would willingly humble themselves for the health and mission of the Church – the mission of preaching Christ and making disciples.

Reflection Questions:

  • In Mark 3:25, Jesus says, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” After reading 1 Corinthians 1:10-17, how does this principle apply to Crossroads and our mission?

  • What are some ways we, as members of the same church, can humble ourselves for the health of Crossroads and our Christ-centered mission?

  • Is there anything in your life that you’ve elevated or divided your focus on (e.g., church leaders, particular teachings, personal preferences, cultural issues)? How can you refocus your attention on Christ alone?
