Day 36 : Mark 4:1-20

Read Mark 4:1-20

Helpful Background Information:

  • Mark 4:1-20 contains the well-known parable of the soils in which Jesus describes the Word of God as seed scattered across four types of ground. Each type of soil represents a different response to the Word: some hear it but let it be taken away, others receive it with excitement but fall away in hardship, still others are choked by distractions, and finally, the good soil represents those who hear, accept, and bear fruit. Jesus taught this parable to a large crowd, speaking from a boat to address them clearly.

Reflection Questions:

  • In Mark 4:13, Jesus says, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?” How does knowing this parable is a key help you approach other parables?

  • What type of soil do you think best represents your heart right now? Why?

  • What can you do to keep your heart open to God’s Word?

  • What does "bearing fruit" look like in your life? How can you increase your spiritual fruitfulness?
